How not to diffuse a controversy, by the Spanish basketball team.

Mike told you about the ridiculous photo the Spanish basketball team posed for, slanting their eyes in some weird mockery of the Chinese. Now comes the aftermath, and public relations doesn’t seem to be one of Spain’s strong suits.
Jose Calderon, who plays for Spain and the Toronto Raptors, said it was an “affectionate gesture”.
“We did [...]

Wow, Spain, Wow!

Who thought that posing with slanted eyes would be a good idea? The answer lies somewhere in the Spanish National team.

Team USA: Mayor of Dunk City?

Over a billion people tuned in to watch the “Redeem Team” hurt the feelings of 12 Chinese people and subsequently 1.3 billion other Chinese. Oddly enough, Yao started the game off by draining a three, but soon enough things got out of hand. I can’t remember the last time I have seen so many dunks [...]

Indiana waives additional hearing, promises to take its medicine this time

Just saw this pop up on ESPN: According to reports out of Bloomington, the Indiana University administration has decided to not request an additional hearing with the NCAA, in response to the NCAA slapping an additional charge of “failure to monitor” the basketball program.
As the ESPN story notes:
University spokesman Larry MacIntyre confirmed the decision Thursday. [...]

Creepy rape accusation throwback day

Okay, what was the deal with yesterday? I know I’ve been pining for a day when Favre-centric news didn’t dominate, but things verged into “creepily weird” territory with two of Thursday’s stories.
First, we get word in the news that former Florida Gator basketball player Teddy Dupay has been arrested on charges of rape, kidnapping, and [...]

Hoosiers sign Story (as well as Story’s “Incident”)

So the big news from Indiana basketball (not involving resignations, mind you) centered on the Hoosiers’ signing of 6′5″ swingman Malik Story.
Story, who was formerly committed to USC, seems to have a rep as a good jump shooter, which is useful for any team whose roster currently consists of a walk-on and a former walk-on. [...]

Let’s just label this as “Coaching your Paterno”

I was having a phone conversation with KT today as she was sitting in the library at a major Midwestern university. As we’re talking, she lowers her voice and whispers “You know, people-watching at the library is fun because there are so many FREAKS.” And if you’ve ever been to that particular library, you’d know [...]

Make all-American team… celebrate in Mexican jail.

Here’s Jeremiah Dominguez. A 5-foot-6 point guard for Portland State, who led the Vikings to their first NCAA Tournament. You’re the Big Sky Conference player of the year. And feeling good because … well… you’re 5-foot-6 and a conference player of the year.

And you’ve just been named an honorable mention all-American. Oh… but wait.

Riches to Rags: Bennett not coming to IU

SportsLink is reporting that Tony Bennett, the current Washington State head coach, has declined to pursue the job at Indiana University.
According to the link above, here’s how it went down:
“I had an exploratory conversation with Indiana,” said Bennett Sunday afternoon, “and I am not going to pursue the Indiana job.”
Bennett said Indiana called Saturday evening [...]
