IU names athletic director, Gerald Ford turns over in grave.

If you’re searching for a President to quote, the good news is you have 43 to choose from.
The bad news happens when you choose to paraphrase a quote from not only one of the most forgettable Presidents in American history, but from one of the darkest periods in the nation’s lore.
Enter Fred Glass. He’s Indiana’s [...]

University of Cincinnati wants you to buy 97 games just to see Bob Huggins.

Remember when Cincinnat basketball could pretty much sell itself on the program Bob Huggins built? Guess what - even when he’s gone, it can do the same thing.
We noticed this in Monday’s edition of The Cincinnati Enquirer:

The ad calls for seven games at a total of $172. The first game on the list? West Virginia [...]

We feel for you, Tim Kawakami, because we’ve been there

You’ve probably seen the video for the picture above (if not, it’s here, along with the story). It’s the one where the Oakland Raiders employee John Herrera completely forgets about this thingy called Youtube and tries to dismember San Jose Mercury-News columnist Tim Kawakami. Not only was Mr. Herrera out of line, but his actions [...]

We defend Sarah Palin’s … sportscasting.

We promise not to get deep into politics - you can get that from a myriad of other places. But we have to comment on this Sarah Palin sportscast.
First, the clip from Saturday, March 5th, 1988. Palin was working at KTUU-TV in Anchorage, and in our opinion wasn’t too terrible. Then we read this comment [...]

So coach, are slaves good at golf?

This from the category of “Do you forgive him because he’s old or because he’s a legendary coach?”.
Our Louisville bureau chief reports an incident from “The Joe B. and Denny show” on WKRD-AM, one hosted by former Louisville coach Denny Crum and former Kentucky coach Joe B. Hall (and a moderater whose name we’ll leave [...]

Your Friday Bob Knight moment

The last, great college team representing USA basketball? The 1984 squad, coached by then-Indiana head man Bob Knight. This highlight is from an exhibition game with Knight’s squad against a Pat Riley-coached NBA All-Star team. On the collegiates? Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Steve Alford, Alvin Robertson and Chris Mullin.
The pros team? Not too bad: Magic [...]

Your Friday Bob Knight moment: Is the General coming to TNA wrestling?

This one makes me smirk, though I don’t know why.
Looks like a show right after Knight left Texas Tech earlier this year. Kind of made me laugh, although in my younger days I would’ve found it more humorous (btw, TNA, despite the double entendre, stands for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, a league competing with WWE).
Knight [...]

Cue the Kentucky cries: Gillispie can’t even outcoach a bunch of sixth graders.

Ok, it’s not quite that simple. But we love needling the big blue nation.
Thursday, UK coach Billy Gillispie gave his time to coach against a sixth-grade team from Dallas. His players? About the same size, just a tad older. Well, MUCH older.
Try a team of horse-racing jockeys. And the final score?
Sixth grade 49, jockeys 32.
We [...]

Indiana waives additional hearing, promises to take its medicine this time

Just saw this pop up on ESPN: According to reports out of Bloomington, the Indiana University administration has decided to not request an additional hearing with the NCAA, in response to the NCAA slapping an additional charge of “failure to monitor” the basketball program.
As the ESPN story notes:
University spokesman Larry MacIntyre confirmed the decision Thursday. [...]

Your Friday/weekend Bob Knight moment.

So we’re a day late. Sue us.

This picture is of a young Bob Knight, but also (as you see in the caption) Larry Crewell, a photographer for the then-Bloomington Herald-Telephone (now the Herald-Times). Crewell died in May 2007 at the age of 70, but in the three decades he worked in Bloomington (many as the [...]
