Are you ready for the (w)NBA, Kentucky?

Guess what Louisville? You might finally get pro hoops! After decades of waiting for the replacement for the ABA’s Kentucky Colonels, this is it!

It’s just the players might have boobs.

According to The Louisville Eccentric Observer (an alternative Lousiville paper), the WNBA might come to town. A new arena, being built downtown for the University of Louisville, will need other tenants besides the Cardinals hoops teams.

“I’ve talked to David Stern, commissioner of the NBA, and he’s planning on coming here in the next two or three months to look at Louisville for a possible WNBA team,” says Jim Host, chairman of the Arena Authority.

Because the WNBA is played during the summer, its schedule wouldn’t conflict with UofL men’s or women’s basketball. Can you feel the excitement?

Louisville desperately wants a pro team - the Houston Rockets used the city for leverage to get a new arena in the late 90’s, and the Hornets and Grizzlies looked set for Kentucky until New Orleans and Memphis swooped them up - but this isn’t what they’re looking for. Problem for Louisville is its desperate for any pro team: Despite having over 1.2 million people in the metro area, the only pro squad is the Louisville Bats baseball team.

Other problem is expansion itself - while the WNBA draws better than you’d think (around 7-8000 fans a game) there are 14 teams already, and you wonder how far the league needs to stretch its resources. But hey, pro is pro, right Louisville? Eh? Eh?
