Dear U. of Cincinnati: Go to Paul Brown Stadium, inherit to the problems

You may have noticed the University of Cincinnati’s suddenly resurgent football program. Yes, it got walloped at Oklahoma, but we think the Sooners will do that to a lot of teams. And with UC’s success comes the problem: Can they keep playing all its games in tiny Nippert Stadium?

Oh no: You’re not suggesting moving games to the NFL’s true black hole, are you?

Not yet, but according to The Cincinnati Enquirer, the Bearcats might soon think about taking a few games there; in fact, the return game with Oklahoma is already scheduled there in ‘10. The problem is Nippert’s size: It seats 35,067 fans, and while the moribund programs of the past drew around 20,000 a game (yes, a big school in a fairly large city could only muster that many), now that they’re winning, the Bearcats are pushing the limit nearly every time. Add that with no luxury boxes, a possible BCS berth this year, and the rumblings start.

“If we continue to do the things we’re doing then having that discussion is warranted,” Athletic Director Mike Thomas said. “We would like to minimally play one game there a year with an Oklahoma-type opponent”.

The Bearcats last played at Paul Brown Stadium in 2002, when a sold-out crowd saw Cincinnati barely lose to Ohio State.
