Mike told you about the ridiculous photo the Spanish basketball team posed for, slanting their eyes in some weird mockery of the Chinese. Now comes the aftermath, and public relations doesn’t seem to be one of Spain’s strong suits.
Jose Calderon, who plays for Spain and the Toronto Raptors, said it was an “affectionate gesture”.
“We did it because we thought it was going to be something nice, something with no problem,” Calderon told Yahoo! Sports. “But somebody wants to talk about it. It is too much of a big deal with you guys (the media) and everybody talking about that.”
We’d say Jose’s ignorance was isolated … until we read everyone else’s comments.
The Lakers’ Pau Gasol, Spain’s center, said “It was supposed to be a picture that inspired the Olympic spirit”, although he did later apologize for the gesture. His coach, Alta García Reneses?
“If I go to play with a taller team and I put here (raising up on the tips of his toes) it is not an offense,” Reneses said. “I can’t understand anything more.”
Reneses said he would have no further comment until after watching a marathon of “Sponge Bob Square Pants” episodes.
More on how senor clueless coach has no idea what’s going on, the country’s official reaction, and which NBA player is ticked no one is being punished.
And then came Thursday’s 72-59 win over Germany. The question came up again, and Mr. oblivious still didn’t get it.
“I can’t understand this. Who’s discussing this?,” Reneses said at a postgame news conference. “You’re discussing this”.
You’re SO right, Alta. Now go back to talking game strategy with Patrick the Starfish.
But one NBA player isn’t too happy. Team USA and Dallas Mavericks’ guard Jason Kidd says if an American did this, David Stern would have been on the first plane to China.
“We would’ve been already thrown out of the Olympics,” Kidd told Yahoo! Sports. “At least, we wouldn’t have been able to come back to the U.S. …There would be suspensions. They won’t do anything to them. It’s a double standard.”
Then you have the leader of Madrid’s bid for the 2016 Olympics (the one Chicago is competing for) who said the incident was isolated, a misunderstanding would not hurt the country’s chances to get the games.
“We are not worried about that,” Mercedes Coghen told The Associated Press. “I think they meant it as a friendly thing. They are really nice guys. As you know they have [Chinese sportswear brand] Li Ning as sponsors. I don’t give more importance to it”
He then went to find Reneses and give him a new tickle-me Elmo doll.
To their credit, the Spanish team did eventually apologize for the photo, but really could do a better job apologizing in public.
Until then, you might want to keep the cameras away.

I just dont see how anyone could find this anything less than offensive. The only thing that could make the situation worse is if instead of saying “cheese” they said something like, “ching chang chong”! Morons
