Indiana waives additional hearing, promises to take its medicine this time

Just saw this pop up on ESPN: According to reports out of Bloomington, the Indiana University administration has decided to not request an additional hearing with the NCAA, in response to the NCAA slapping an additional charge of “failure to monitor” the basketball program.

As the ESPN story notes:

University spokesman Larry MacIntyre confirmed the decision Thursday. He had no explanation for why it was made after university president Michael McRobbie promised to vigorously fight the charge in June.

Strange, but the official cover story for this decision appears to be a desire for the NCAA to decide what (if any) sanctions to give the school in a relatively short period of time. Apparently, requesting another hearing with the NCAA would require a delay in the sanctioning process, which could mean that no ruling comes down until after the season starts.

For once, I agree with IU’s actions in this matter. Just send the damn letter, sit in the corner, and wait for the NCAA to whack you. Get it over with already.

The sooner the punishment comes down, the sooner the pain begins. Ban them for two years from the tournament? Heck, they won’t sniff it anyhow. Wouldn’t bother me in the least.
