We didn’t think the WSOP could top Ernie Scherer III.
Remember him? Dude whose parents were brutally murdered near San Jose. Dude who police called a “person of interest”, and seized his car. Dude who said “Screw it! I’m going to Vegas for the World Series!”
Boy, were we wrong.
According to our new favorite website Gambling911.com, another player at the WSOP?
38-year-old Shahram Sheikhan. Professional gambler. Reached the WSOP final table in 2005, finishing 11th. Nicknamed “The Iron Sheik”.
Oh, and he’s a convicted child molester. Served nine months in jail back in 1995 for sexual battery. Five more years on probation. And, for a few months, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement wanted him deported back to his native Iran.
And he’s Steve Bartman’s father, too … ok, maybe not.
In November, a US immigrations judge stopped the deportation hearing, saying the feds failed to provide evidence to support the motion. Still, the insiders are getting pissed. Steve Somach is a poker reporter (is that a real title?) and wasn’t too thrilled about Mr. Sheikhan’s appearance.
“Seriously, do you think a guy convicted of child molestation and serving nine months in jail would be allowed to compete in the Olympics or Super Bowl for that matter?,” Somach said.
According to The Las Vegas Review-Journal, Immigration officials arrested Sheikhan at his home last August 30th. He bonded out for $10,000. Sheikhan was being threatened with deportation because of multiple crimes, though the sexual battery conviction is the only one we could find.
Anyhow, here’s the Sheikh in action, and not in a good way. Seems he’s trying to piss off some dude named Mike Matusow. Go to :45. Guy’s got quite a temper.
