The fix again? Wimbledon matches feared tainted

Oy, here we go again.

From the ghosts of Nikolay Davydenko comes the newest tennis-betting story: Eight Wimbledon matches are under suspicion of being fixed by gamblers. The story comes from a dossier produced by leading bookmaking companies, and presented to the ATP Tour. Of the eight, four came at last year’s Wimbledon, none of them with players from the United Kingdom.

The dossier identifies 140 matches worldwide that are “suspect”. An official with knowledge of the dossier talked to The London Times.

“If you look at a tournament, you might see one match for 23,000 pounds [in betting turnover], one for 27,000 pounds, one for 36,000 pounds and one for 4.5 pounds,” the official said. “It doesn’t take a genius to work out that something is going on in the last one.”

According to The Times all the losers singled out from last year’s Wimbledon are allegedly involved in other tournament’s suspect matches. One player was listed for eight separate matches.

Great news, eh Wimbledon? BTW, in case you’re wondering, Davydenko opens with German Benjamin Becker.
