We don’t follow Poker too much. Honestly, it bores us, and the craze never made much sense. That said, this story caught our eye.
The guy on the right? Might be a grand guy with a lot of debt, or could be a dude with a LOT more baggage.
According to gambling911.com, that’s Ernie Scherer III, a guy the website indicated is a big gambler, a big-time poker player who, according to the website, owes some big-time money … and police have ruled him a person of interest in his parents’ murder north of San Jose, Calif.
And he’s attending this week’s World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. D’oh!
Tip one: Big time debt, police not ruling you out a suspect in your parents murder? Maybe you shouldn’t go to Vegas. Just my opinion.
More on the Scherer parents’ murder, how Ernie fits in, and how detectives have used the Gambling911.com website to get tips.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, someone killed Ernie Scherer Jr., 60, and his wife Charlene Abendroth, 57, around March 7th. Their beaten bodies were found March 14th; their daughter, living in Utah, asked a country club worker to check on them when she couldn’t reach the couple.
Early in the case, Alameda County detectives were looking for an ‘01 Red Chevy Camaro, one with a description matching a car seen near the scene March 7th. Scherer III drives an ‘01 Red Chevy Camaro. Police have seized the car.
And now the police keep throwing his name around.
“From the very beginning we look at family members and rule them out and unfortunately for Ernest Scherer III, he cannot be ruled out,” Alameda County Sgt. Scott Dudek told reporters this week.
But the story gets more interesting.
Last week, Dudek went to the Gambling911.com, asking anyone that the younger Scherer owes money to should contact the Sheriff’s Department. And there may be a few folks: While the website claims Scherer III won more than $300,000 playing poker, it also believes he lost a bunch and owes a bunch.
Still, this is the inherent danger when police use the term “person of interest”, since it’s been three months and no one has been charged. Yes, they have Scherer III’s car and have searched his home, but they haven’t listed a motive, and haven’t charged him with anything. And if you read the article in the Mercury News, you know the elder Scherer was also a gambler.
That said, if police are looking at you, and clearly trying to pressure you through the media, do you really go the World Series of Poker? Really? Really?
