Stanley Cup - Night 1 Game Capsules

NY Rangers 4 - New Jersey Devils 1

The Rangers did just enough and New Jersey made 1 save too few before the Rangers blew the game open late. If it were any other goalie I might worry about the game-winner, but it’s Martin Brodeur so I’m sure nobody is going to worry overmuch. If you like banging your head against a wall, this series looks poised to live up to its considerable hype.

Ottawa 0 - Pittsburgh 4

Two quick goals put the Penguins up early. Ottawa responded with a little bit of heart but couldn’t convert on a pair of 5-3 advantages. They either get Alfredson back or they’re going home, this team doesn’t look anything like last year’s Eastern Conference Champ.

Colorado 3 - Minnesota 2 in OT

The team that gets Joe Sakic usually wins in overtime. I’m pretty sure that’s a rule somewhere. Minnesota rebounded well from an early 2-0 deficit, but it wasn’t enough. Troubling is the loss of Mark Parrish during the first period.

Calgary 3 - San Jose 2

Kiprusoff rebounded from an early mistake to dominate the Sharks. The Flames were relentless and aggressive, San Jose seemed flat until the game’s final minutes. Kiprusoff was as good as he had to be, but if I’m Calgary I worry about the last goal. Game 2 will be pivotal.
