Fox 33 KMSS in Louisiana posted a report on their website at about 11:30 this morning, indicating that Stanford coach Trent Johnson would be packing his bags and heading to Baton Rouge to take over the head basketball position at Louisiana State.
This report comes on the heels of last night’s story out of Amherst, indicating that UMass head coach Travis Ford had pulled his name out of consideration for the LSU job.
If it’s true that Johnson is headed to LSU, then first of all, it’s a bit of a shock. Coaching at LSU is a bit different than coaching at Stanford, and it’s surprising that Johnson, a former assistant for the Cardinal who was hand-picked to replace Mike Montgomery after he bolted for the pros, would leave on the heels of his greatest success as Stanford coach.
At the same time, the LSU position does promise better recruiting, as well as ten games a year against the worst conference division in major college basketball.
Some additional Louisiana media outlets have started reporting this story as fact, so I think we can assume for now that it’s happening. The move could very well create a chain reaction in the coaching profession — Jamie Dixon, who turned down the Cal job, is liable to be far more interested in the Stanford position. If Dixon leaves Pittsburgh for the Cardinal, then we could very well see Xavier’s Sean Miller taking over at his alma mater.
The biggest question in all of this — what must Mike Montgomery be thinking right now?
