Make all-American team… celebrate in Mexican jail.

Here’s Jeremiah Dominguez. A 5-foot-6 point guard for Portland State, who led the Vikings to their first NCAA Tournament. You’re the Big Sky Conference player of the year. And feeling good because … well… you’re 5-foot-6 and a conference player of the year.

short but tough

And you’ve just been named an honorable mention all-American. Oh… but wait.

You learn about it in some Mexican slam after you and your 7-foot teammate blasted a dude in the face on spring break. Smart. One would think that should be among the things on a checklist of things not to do on spring break in Mexico: 1) Don’t fall asleep on the beach with no sun screen, 2) stay away from the buildings with the red lights, 3) don’t get in a cab, and (somewhere on the list), stay out of the way of Mexican law enforcement.

It begs the question, does a Mexican guard congratulate the guy when the all-American team is announced? And the poor guy who got his face rearranged? Probably the last thing he thought would happen when he saw a 5-foot-6 guy coming at him.

In other Oregon news…

There’s another Division I team (well, sort of) looking for a coach. Oregon State, which probably doesn’t register on most people’s radar of basketball hot beds, is searching for another schmuck to mop the floors of the Pac-10 cellar. And San Diego’s Bill Grier is the Beavos (that’s what we call them in this neck of the woods…) first choice. Too bad for Portland State coach Ken Bone, who has a small issue with his returning conference player of the year.

Dennis Dixon, who should have had a seat in New York for the Heisman ceremony, will make a nice looking clipboard jockey.

Another thought… what would this pickup game look like? Greg Oden vs. Dominguez.
