“Hey JR! Why the Spurs got the word ‘loss’ on the jersey? ‘Los’? What ‘dat?!?!”

So you may have noticed something different in Sunday’s Spurs/Suns game. Something a tad different.

You can see it there on Manu Ginobli’s jersey: The word “los” in front of the Spurs name (the Suns had the same thing).

Apparently this was the NBA’s way to pay tribute to Latin heritage (noche Latina, or Latin night): Plopping a “los” right on the jersey, but even with our tiny Spanish understanding, wouldn’t it be los Soles for Phoenix, and los Espuelas for San Antonio? Are we missing something?

Maybe the NBA only speaks Spanglish. And that confused a lot of people.

Case in point? This yahoo! message board, where the word “los” on the jersey caused mass confusion. Some of our favorite questions and/or responses?

  • “ShaOakHo…, Los means “the” in Spanish, I think” — Johns
  • “The Spurs had the same thing on their jerseys. They should force the announcers to do the whole thing in Spanish too. The idea sucked. I wouldn’t wipe my butt with one of those jerseys” — Seebreeze CC
  • “They were simulcasting the game on Telemundo, and they didn’t want new viewers getting confused” — Endoscented
  • “BECAUSE TO SHOW RESPECT TO HISPANIC PEOPLE..” — Miamiheatwd

WE WOULD AGREE WITH THAT LAS … excuse me: Forgot to turn off the caps lock. We agree with our Miami friend, save the fact it just seems like the NBA patronized folks by sticking “los” on the unis. But what do I know?

Now I gotta get back to posting more on el blog.
