All right, we tried. Really, we did. Despite our love for “The Dan Patrick show”, we listened, and listened, and listened to Mike Tirico, trying to be convinced.
And we’ve decided: It sucks.
The show is boring, what with Tirico’s giddy, inside-joking with Michele Tafoya, or his hob nobbing with Kirk Herbstreit, who, quite obviously, knows nothing about any sport save college football.
And Mike can’t do an interview to save his life.
Case in point: Today he talks to Rick Pitino. Does he ask about the upcoming game with Georgetown, one that will decide champion of the best conference in college basketball (yes, PAC-10 fans - get over it)? Does he ask how Pitino will neutralize Roy Hibbert, or distract Jonathon Wallace? Or how Pitino turned around a near-disastrous season littered with injuries into one where not only could the Cards get a 1 seed, but contend for the national title?
No. He asks what it was like coaching in Madison Square Garden, what he likes about the team, then Herbstreit asks a handful of idiot questions about what coaching in the Big East does for preparing the Cardinals.
HUH?!?!
We heard him a few back refuse to challenge Georgetown coach John Thompson III on the controversial foul call at the end of the Hoyas victory over Villanova. And beyond that, every interview seems to be this happy, happy, joy, joy, kumbaya, we can’t argue period. And that’s not good radio - how many times did Patrick challenge the guys who tried to get away with BS?
You’re better than that, Mike.
They used to say Tirico was valuable at the WWL because he made everyone around him better. Perhaps that’s true on SportsCenter, where Mike shines, but hosting his own show, well, we’ll take a pass.
Good thing they don’t have some screaming schmuck after him and crazy Schrutebag before him. Oh wait …

Amen. I’m glad someone else thinks the same thing I do. Every segment of every show, even the ones with Van Pelt(who I’m a big fan of) are absolutely horrid. And I don’t know if you’ve picked up on this or not(maybe it’s just my cynical nature showing), but he doesn’t even hide the fact that he doesn’t really want to be there. And don’t even get me started on Herbstreit…
