March has arrived, but it sure as hell didn’t bring any real clarity to the bracket situation. Just as it looked as if we’d discovered three bona fide #1 seeds, two of them lost during the week, and the teams below them all pulled off important victories. Meanwhile, a couple of teams finally woke up from their stupidity-induced comas long enough to record decent victories, while others decided that the NIT is really a neat place to be.
Let’s take a look at what we’ve been given as we enter the first full week of March Madness, after the jump.
We start off with the East region, which still holds our #1 overall seed:
Yes, Tennessee is still my #1 overall seed. Do I feel good about this? No. But who belongs here instead? Texas had a shot, before they laid an egg in Lubbock this weekend. Memphis is hard to put here due to their loss against Tennessee eight days ago. UCLA did sweep the Arizona road trip, but I’m not impressed with either victory - Arizona State is a critically flawed team, and Arizona is now two games UNDER .500 in the Pac 10. Anyway, enough of that. Elsewhere, we still see the 4/13 Indiana-Davidson matchup…despite the Hoosiers’ embarrassing blowout loss at Michigan State, they have enough on the resume to maintain their seeding. Xavier keeps flirting with the 2-line, but it’s hard to justify moving them ahead of the teams already there. Georgetown does move up however, thanks to a big road win against Marquette.
Next, we move on to the West Region:
I think that ultimately, UCLA will end up with the #1 overall seed, but they’re not quite there yet. Texas A&M is sliding severely, and they’re gonna have serious trouble making the field if things continue along their current path. Gonzaga could be moving up to a 6 seed if they can win out in the WCC tournament. North Carolina’s resume still does nothing for me — two wins against Clemson do not a 1-seed make.
Time to move back to the middle of the country…let’s check out the Midwest Region:
Duke moves up in the seeding, thanks to the work they’ve done already this year. Michigan State is back from the dead, and could move up to a 4 seed if they make some noise in the Big 10 tournament. Kansas has room for improvement on the seed line, provided they can take care of business in the Big 12 tourney. A win by Louisville at Georgetown might propel them up a seed. Arizona may actually be overvalued here as a 10 seed.
And finally, we check out the South:
Memphis maintains its 1-seed…there’s just not enough justification to kick them out. Arizona State and Virginia Tech both make the field, which is pretty damn sad. Texas may be in better shape here as a 2 seed than as a 1 seed.
