Didn’t you use to be Pete Gaudet? And you’re coaching what?!?!

If you’re a Duke fan, well, you might have just thrown up a bit in your mouth seeing this guy’s picture.

That’s Pete Gaudet, the man who took over for Mike Krzyzewski in 1995. If you remember, Coach K said he had a bad back, left 12 games into the season, and Gaudet coached the rest of the season, losing 15 of 19 games en route to the school’s only non-NCAA tournament season the last quarter decade.

So where’s he at 13 years later? Ohio State. With the women’s program. As a video coordinator.

Things change. In Gaudet’s case, a whole bunch - coaching women’s hoops 13 years after leading the premier program in college hoops is normal compared to what else has happened in Gaudet’s life. After the jump, more on how Gaudet left Duke, and when he took the NCAA to court.

After Gaudet’s struggles at Duke (the school still credits him, not Coach K with all 15 losses and four wins, a point of controversy for some). Gaudet wasn’t asked to return, something he says he has no bitterness over (somehow we doubt that)

Then, he did something Bob Knight probably loves him for: Pete took on the NCAA.

While at Duke, Gaudet was in a job called restricted-earnings assistant coach, one where he made a whopping $12,000 base salary, and $4,000 for off-season income. With more than 2,000 other assistant coaches, Gaudet beat the NCAA in court, lifting the limits on that position, winning a $54.5 million award from a jury.

And with his share, Gaudet took a year off college hoops before joining the Vanderbilt men’s coaching staff. Then he threw hoops another curve ball: Teaching a year at Pearl-Cohn High School in Nashville. Instead of hitting rock bottom, Gaudet seemed comfortable, and translated that into a job with Jim Foster and the Vanderbilt women’s team. That job lead to the Ohio State one, where he sits now.

Gaudet’s in his sixth season at OSU, but his third year in the video coordinator position. Seems like his moving is all done, which may be a good thing for him … and Duke fans trying to forget that ‘95 season.
