So Saturday night we watched Tennessee’s win over then-unbeaten Memphis with more than a bit of shock. Not because of the Vols play, but because of ESPN’s ad nauseum yak about Memphis’ pursuit of perfection, and the soundbites the WWL used for it’s montages.
Yes, that was Don Shula of the 1972 Dolphins, an annoying man from the most annoying team in world history, you saw there. We said this before, but is there a more arrogant team in sports history?
Beyond that, WWL, please tell me which unbeaten college hoops team Don Shula coached? You realize the last team to go lossless was the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, right? Most people would have to guess because, during this year’s NFL season, as the New England Patriots approached perfection, you seemed to mention and talk about the ‘72 Dolphins every waking second. As Memphis closed in? Barely a mention of the ‘76 Hoosiers; in fact, the montages the WWL used Saturday included Shula, Tom Osborne (three unbeaten season in college football. That’s the oblong ball, WWL), and Bill Walton of UCLA, who was part of three perfect seasons at UCLA.
Would it have been too hard to track down Quinn Buckner? Scott May? Kent Benson? We’ll find them, call them, drag them .. just don’t bring back Mercury Morris.

Kent “Bentson”?
That’d be a hell of a sitcom — a 7-foot redheaded butler in the governor’s mansion.
I wanted Robert Guillaume back on TV. Is that so wrong?
