UPDATE: Five “major” violations at IU under Sampson

The news broke this morning, and it’s not pretty.  The NCAA alleged five major violations against Indiana University’s men’s basketball team, a school that hasn’t had a major violation since 1960.

First off, here’s the PDF copy of the report: List of NCAA Allegations

Now, what does the report mean? In its most basic terms, the report indicates that  Sampson, assistant coach Jeff Meyer, and former assistant coach Rob Senderoff, actively circumvented the recruiting restrictions placed upon them by the NCAA as a result of Sampson’s previous misconduct. It also indicates that Sampson then lied to both the school and the NCAA investigators. Furthermore, the report uncovered impermissible contact between Sampson and a recruit, as well as an impermissible gift given to that recruit.

The Indianapolis Star story from earlier today noted the following out of the report:

Sampson “failed to deport himself … with the generally recognized high standard of honesty” and “failed to promote an atmosphere for compliance within the men’s basketball program,” according to the allegations.

Based on what I’ve read in the report, I think Indiana can still get out of this with a minimum of blood spilled — but Sampson will have to be fired ASAP. The continued breaking of rules, plus his lying to investigators, just screams “SHOW-CAUSE TAG” to me.

I also think that Indiana A.D. Rick Greenspan needs to be fired, for hiring Sampson and for not having greater control over the basketball program.
