Katz: Major NCAA violations at IU under Sampson

I’m always hesitant to take anything Andy Katz says at face value, particularly when there’s not a source attached to it (Remember the fiasco prior to IU hiring Sampson? Yeah, exactly). However, if Andy Katz is correct this time, things are about to get pretty goddamn ugly in Hoosierville.

Multiple news outlets reported on Tuesday night that the NCAA had given Indiana University a list of violations uncovered as a result of this latest imbroglio involving head coach Kelvin Sampson, phone calls, and…other stuff.

Anyway,  here’s what Andy Katz had to say in his story on the matter, as of 12:20 AM EST on Wednesday:

The NCAA sent a notice of allegations to Indiana University last Friday detailing major violations in the men’s basketball program, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

ESPN.com has learned over the last week that the NCAA uncovered new information since Indiana self-reported violations under second-year head coach Kelvin Sampson in October. That new information helped result in a major violations tag that could put the season of Indiana (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) under a cloud of uncertainty and the career of Sampson as well.

Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see exactly what this “new information” entails. But if these violations do indeed end up being “major”, then this is hardly surprising, you know? Kelvin Sampson’s program at Oklahoma was the polar opposite of the type of program that Indiana University has prided itself on in the past. Anyone who is shocked that Sampson would continue cheating at his new job needs a reality check.

If  Katz is correct, then Sampson should obviously be fired. But so should Rick Greenspan, the IU athletic director — on the same day. It was Greenspan that brought Sampson to IU, and it’s Greenspan who should leave with him.

We’ll be following this story as it develops throughout the day here on TMC.

Yeah, I feel the same way about Katz. He just seems so smarmy, and he actually gets offended when it seems(to him, at least) that his integrity is questioned. He’s the college basketball equivalent of Chris Mortensen. That said, I don’t trust Sampson, and I wouldn’t be shocked in the least if this were true.

Gordon and DJ gone after this season. Greenspan and Kelvin should close behind. Program goes on 1, maybe two year’s probation.

    I-U hoops imploding in 3 … 2 … 1 …
