John Rocker, Near Death Experience, Unfortunately Un-Related

I think the important thing is that John Rocker is fully engaged.  Or that he’s still alive and relevant enough to reveal in a Monday interview that Bud Selig and MLB Officials just might have turned a blind eye to a performance enhancing drug epidemic.  Apparently, as part of a 14 game suspension incurred in 2000 for ‘insensitive’ remarks, an MLB-mandated test indicated the presence of Steroids in Rocker’s system.  The forthright Rocker revealed that these results were shared with MLB who took no steps to confront or solve the problem, a claim that has been disputed.

Rocker’s revelation is significant in that it may just be the tip of the iceberg.  Though unfounded and wildly speculative, if proven true his claims could indicate both rampant drug use and a league adminstration content to look the other way.  Such claims are certainly outlandish, but implicate the very spirit of the game.  At the risk of overreacting, someone should involve a 3rd party before the situation gets any further out of control.

Also, because the jackass is so much fun to quote, “I’ve taken a lot of crap from a lot of people.  Probably more than anybody in the history of the sport.  I know Hank [Aaron] and Jackie [Robinson] took a good deal of crap, but I guarantee it wasn’t for six years.  I just keep thinking:  How much more am I supposed to take?”

In other news, it’s nice to hear that Richard Zednik has been upgraded to stable after his cartoid artery was cut by teammate Olli Jokinen’s skate this past Sunday.  The Florida forward appears to have come through a life-saving operation and should make a full recovery.  Doctors say he could resume play as quickly as 6 to 8 weeks from now, but suggest several months is more realistic.

The incident brings back memories of Buffalo goaltender Clint Malarchuk and perhaps the first bit of sprts video that I remember begin scared of.
