Joe Tiller is an upset man. Rich Rodriguez and Michigan absconded with Tiller’s prized recruit, a receiver out of Ohio named Roy Roundtree who had verbally committed to Purdue but signed a national letter of intent with Michigan on Wednesday.
Tiller, who of course is a paragon of moral virtue himself, responded to this situation by calling Rodriguez a “guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil“.
I won’t get into the specifics of this verbal/letter commitment business — Brian over at MGoBlog has an excellent breakdown of the silliness surrounding verbal commitments in the Big Ten in general — but I did want to take the time to tip my hat to the Sports by Brooks writer who came up with this little gem to describe Purdue football:
We’ve always looked at Purdue football as the 98 Degrees of that golden age of music, the ’90s boy band phenomenon. A couple small hits here and there, but never quite able to grab attention away from the big boys - like the Backstreet Boys (Michigan) and N’Sync (Ohio State).
Does that mean that Vinny Sutherland was Nick Lachey?
