Where have you gone, Mateen Cleaves

Surely you can’t forget that odd, smiling dance Mateen Cleaves did in the waning moments of Michigan State’s 2000 NCAA title game victory over Florida. Made the kid a star, as did his play on a bad wheel. And surely you thought “kid’s gotta make it to the league”.

Well, he has. Problem is it’s in the ULEB Cup league in Greece.

Mateen’s playing for Panionios On Telecoms, averaging a meager 5.3 ppg with a respectable 2.8 assists per contest. Cleaves got here after a winding road, being drafted 14th by the Pistons before playing with the Kings, Cavs, Nets and a trio of NBDL teams before a cup of coffee in Russia, then this year to Greece.

Mateen’s now 31, which normally means the window for the NBA is closing (that and the fact four teams have determined he’s not good enough for them).

BTW, Mateen’s team includes former Indiana forward Haris Mujezinovic and former Pitt star Levon Kendall. The ULEB Cup league also includes former UConn troublemaker Khalid El-Amin, who, upon winning the NCAA title in 1999, avoided the goofy Cleaves dance and just jumped on a table.
