Flinders Park is doing a good job branding itself the fight sport capital of the universe.
A year after fighting between Croatian and Serbian fans on day one of the ‘07 Australian Open (150 were ejected), now the onus is on the Aussie police. Cops used pepper spray (yes, pepper spray) during a match between Chilean Fernando Gonzales and the immortal Kostantinos Economidis of Greece. Victoria Police superintendent John Cooke said three fans of Ecnomodis were yelling obscenities in Greek, one swung at an officer, and when they became threatening, the cops used the pepper spray.
The problem? Someone got cell phone video. And, well, Mr. Cooke’s explanation doesn’t jive with what we see.
Here’s what it looked like. Watch the cop who sprays, then casually walks away (btw, ten people were treated after the spray spread. Gonzales won the match):

That is ridiculous. It is a tennis match. This isn’t an international soccer meeting where its ok if someone gets brutally hurt.
