How happy was Xavier to get an award id’ing the school as a “Mid-Major”? Happy enough for the Muskies to poop all over it, then send it back.
According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, Rivals.com called XU, told them point guard Drew Lavender had won it’s mid-major player of the week award. And the school told them not to let the door hit them on the ass.
”It’s such as easy thing to do to put labels on people,” Xavier Athletic Director Mike Bobinski said. “But you do an injustice when you don’t know or tell the whole story by lumping people into broad major or mid-major categories.”
He does have a point: As we said back in November, the national media has taken the lazy step of lumping EVERYONE outside the BCS conferences into the mid-major category. Does Xavier belong in the same class as Gardner-Webb? Absolutely not: The Musketeers are not just ranked in the top 25 in both polls, but have been a fairly consistent national player since the mid-80’s.
That said, the Atlantic Ten conference surely isn’t in the top seven or eight leagues in the nation, and if we still consider the Missouri Valley Conference a mid-major, the A-10 has to be in that category as well. Of course, the West Coast Conference would likely meet the same fate, but like Xavier, Gonzaga is definitely the exception to the rule.
Bottom line: Stop being so lazy, journalists - re-define the term mid-major. Please. For us. Or Mike Bobinski will poop on you.

Guy should stop bitching they are a mid major team. I bet 50% of people who watch the tournament or more don’t know where Xavier is. Hell I bet a bunch don’t even know what state they play in.
True, but 50% of the folks wouldn’t know where Temple, Villanova, or Gonzaga were, either.
