Wednesday Morning Hangover

hangover

The Monday morning hangover was so bad, it lasted two extra days.

— Bryant Gumbel knows he sucked last year as an NFL play-by-play guy. So of course, he’s doing it again this year. Why? Why Why Why? Why do networks, especially ones who supposedly know what they’re doing, continue to ram sucky play-by-play broadcasters down our throats? There ARE other broadcasters out there, network people! I know! I’ve worked with them before! (Awful Announcing)

— Forecasting the inevitable return of Schottenheimer. (Kissing Suzy Kolber)

— Pondering the uselessness of the Gold Glove. (The Wayne Fontes Experience)

— UCLA guard Russell Westbrook has some remarkable hair. (Signal To Noise)

— From the “Why?” category: Jim McIlvane has a blog. (Can’t Stop The Bleeding)

— What the hell, Big Ten? Get your ass in gear! Ohio State drops a game to D-II Findlay College last night. (Storming the Floor)

As long as there’s a dearth of talent in the play by play pool, we’re going to continue to get lousy performances week after week. Just because someone is a big name doesn’t automatically make them great, and it’s time that the networks realized this.

They’ll never realize it, and that’s the biggest travesty of the whole situation. How many times must we see these people recycled — even into their old age? I mean, Brent Musberger’s career effectively ended in 1990 after the Final Four…so what’s he doing on ABC as their lead play-by-play guy 17 years later?
