Remember that cute little Appalachian State team? The one that marched into the big house and beat up Michigan 34-32, a win that spurred the AP to allow non-division 1 teams to be voted in the top 25?
After losing two if their last four games, the Mountaineers may not even make the Division I-AA playoffs.
And you thought Minnesota was bad.
Saturday Appalachian State dropped to 5-2 with a 38-35 home loss to Georgia Southern. In the loss, Appalachian State gained 557 yards … and didn’t win (note: We know you’re not too familiar with Division I-AA … er, the football championship subdivision — what the suits at the NCAA wants us to call it — but a yard equals three fee there, too).
ASU is now ranked 10th in the new division I-AA poll, but is just 1-2 in the Southern Conference, good enough for sixth place, behind the immortal Elon Phoenix football squad.
Raise your hand if you knew Elon had a football team. Heck, raise your hand if you know where Elon is.
ASU’s division only takes 16 teams in the playoffs (you know, 16 more than Division 1 does) and another loss could put it’s playoff hopes in serious danger.
Of course, things could be much worse: You could be Notre Dame. Anyone think Appalachian can schedule UCLA?
