And the hits keep coming for the Hoosiers.
Plenty of news from the drug hearing of IU recruit Bud Mackey of Scott County, Kentucky, the player who was to be Kentucky’s favorite for Mr. Basketball. Turns out he’s in so much trouble Bud might literally take his ball and go home.
Tuesday, Mackey pleaded not guilty in district court to two felony drug
charges: trafficking in a controlled substance (cocaine), and trafficking that within 1,000 yards of a school. September 28th, authorities said school officials noticed Mackey was missing from his 5th-period class, then went outside, found him smelling of pot, in possession of coke (btw, the trafficking within 1,000 feet of a school is a SERIOUS charge: If guilty, it could double his sentence).
But then the bombshell. Mackey, already suspended from school, may not return. According to The Louisville Courier-Journal his attorney Jerry Wright told the judge his client intends to withdraw from Scott County H.S. Later, Wright pulled back a tad, saying the family would decide. Both Mackey and Wright declined comment leaving court.
Mackey led Scott County to the 2007 state basketball title and won the tournament’s MVP and was ready to sign with IU November 14th. By NCAA rules, IU can’t comment on potential recruits, so no one knows if the Hoosiers are still recruiting Mackey.
Our guess is IU fades away, Mackey goes to prep school for a year, then reappears in 2008.
