Murray claims match fixing real, ATP pees pants

andy-murray.jpgAdd the top British tennis player to a long list of players claiming, yes, gambling is a big part of tennis.

And you thought the blue courts would get rid of it all.

The Napoleon Dynamite look-a-like Andy Murray says match fixing is rampant, but difficult to prove.

“They can try their best until the last couple of games in each set and then make mistakes, hit a couple of double faults and that’s it,” Murray said. “(Match-fixing) is pretty disappointing, but everyone knows it goes on.”

And now the ATP is going wacky, nutty freaky crazy.

Responding to ANOTHER tennis player saying the obvious - players are approached all the time by gamblers - the ATP threatened the players: Come forward within 48 hours of being propositioned by a money scumbag or face penalties (What specifically are those penalties? Of course the ATP won’t say).

davydenko_06.jpgThis comes two months after Betfair, an online booking agency, took 4th-ranked Russian Nikolay Davydenko’s match with mediocre pro Martin Vassallo Arguello off it’s boards, claiming an unusual amount of money bet against Davydenko. The Russian defaulted in the third set. Both players denied wrongdoing.

Since then, many players have admitted yes, gambling is as much a part of the sport as the yellow ball. American doubles player Bob Bryan said he’s knows players who’ve been approached about match fixing. US Open finalist Novak Djokovic said he was offered around $100,000 to drop a match in St. Petersburg, Russia. Gilles Elseneer told the media he was offered a similar amount to tank a Wimbledon match in 2005.

The ATP will claim it’s making progress: The Australian Open won’t allow a betting parlor inside the tournament grounds, and on friday the sport will meet with the International Tennis Federation and Women’s Tennis Association (and a rep from the Grand Slam tournaments), hoping to create an “integrity unit” for both the men’s game and the women’s WTA tour.

Perhaps the squad will work. But every time a player comes out, especially names as big as Murray, Djokovic and Bryan, it makes the ATP look as clueless as baseball’s been on the steroids issue.
