Who was that chubby-faced radio reporter who grabbed South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier on the field last night? Turns out that guy, who did so right after ESPN’s Erin
Andrews talked to the ol’ ball coach (and was on the WWL for about two seconds), was none other than former Pittsburgh Steeler running back Duce Staley.
Yes, Duce still looks like he’s 9-years old. Staley’s now part of the Gamecocks Radio Network, working as a sideline reporter.
What’s more interesting is how he got the job.
Staley, a former Gamecock halfback, recently retired from the NFL last year after a 10-year career highlighted by his final three seasons in Pittsburgh and the 2005 Super Bowl championship, but he’s only working GRN because a guy named Rob DeBoer (another former Gamecock who had Staley’s job) agreed to take a leave while under a federal investigation. For what? Well …
According to a number of websites, including The Palmetto Scoop, the Federal Trade Commission is investigating him as part of a large pyramid scheme, one selling product packages for a virtual music store. According to The Scoop, the Feds have frozen DeBoer’s assets.
Sounds like if convicted DeBoar could face a big fine, but no jail time.
DeBoer is a former South Carolina fullback from the early 90’s (you know, the Steve Taneyhill era), a baseball and football star, and a guy one website describes as “one of the most popular guys ever to walk the Carolina campus” .
Most athletes make mediocre broadcasters. We have no clue what Staley or DeBoer is like on air, but we’re gonna make the safe assumption DeBoer’s announcing days are done. Let’s hope Staley’s broadcast career has a happier finish than the guy he’s succeeding.

Take away the mustache and Duce Staley looks like Joey Porter’s little brother (which, I suppose, is possible).
Seriously though, if you’re going to commit mass fraud in a pyramid scheme, why the hell would you do it by selling VIRTUAL MUSIC packages? Have we sunk so low in society that our criminal enterprises are this lame? We should be providing better for our former athletes.
Speaking of Duce Staley … here’s an article about him from Philadelphia:

Any update on Deboer?
