Ok, I have to admit: I stopped watching this game last night. It must have been the 6th inning and David Ortiz had stupidly taken off for 2nd on a fly to right. Bobby Abreu tracked the ball down, made a decent throw to first, and …. Giambi blew it. Ortiz was a sitting duck and the Yankees blew it. The Sox capitalized by scoring two runs that inning and taking a 7-2 lead.
And now I wake up to an 8-7 win. Glorious. Beating Papelbon? Tremendously satisfying. He has the best stuff of any closer in the game.
Still, I carry the concern that the Yankees cannot afford to play Jason Giambi at first base in the playoffs. You’re not going to have a 6-run inning every night which makes up for mistakes in the field.
